Wood Urchin was born out of a need for low cost but unique and memorable webdesign.

It started with me simply building and maintaining my own website, 11 years ago. It was an ugly, ugly site, full of whistles and bells, bad graphics and revolting colour schemes, but I learnt from there.

In 2003 I built my own website for showcasing and selling my main interest - my artwork, and had people approach me, asking me to do similar work for them.
Since I'd never seriously built a website for anybody but myself before, I declined the offers, but as I got asked more I started to wonder why I couldn't do the same for somebody else. And as it turns out, I could.
And I did. And people were happy.
Aww, what a lovely story, no?

It eventually occured to me that maybe I could build websites for people more often. Having spoken with the people I'd done websites for, I realised that there seemed to be a lack of small web design places, catering to individuals with a small budget, while at the same time producing something visually appealing.

One client in particular claimed that he went to an established webdesign company before coming to me, only to be charged an outrageous fortune for a bland website that looked like a template spat from a point-and-click program.
It didn't reflect them or their business at all, and they felt that new clients finding them online would have no reason to commit the website or business to memory, due to the lackluster site.

My aim is to provide websites with personality. As your home on the web, it should be distinctly yours when it's finished.

Due to Wood Urchin being so small (it's just me!), costs are minimal. I don't need to spend money on staff wages, office rental, ritzy advertising, whiteboard markers, cucumber sandwhiches with the crusts cut off....I don't have to pay for any of that, so I can charge significantly less.
